The Smeralda Coast

Located in the northeast of Sardinia in Italy, Costa Smeralda spans approximately 55 kilometers along the Gallura coast in the province of Sassari. While Porto Cervo is its most famous destination, Costa Smeralda also includes other renowned spots like Porto Rotondo, Baia Sardinia, and Cala di Volpe. Known for its enchanting beaches, crystal-clear waters, luxurious tourist facilities, and breathtaking natural landscapes, Costa Smeralda is commonly thought to derive its name from its location. However, it is actually a registered trademark created to represent, protect, and manage the natural environment and services provided by the Costa Smeralda Consortium, comprising around 3,900 members including villa, apartment, shop, restaurant owners, and hospitality establishments. Despite common stereotypes associating this coast with the glamorous lifestyles of its habitual noble visitors, its intrinsic charm lies in the stunning beauty of its coves, promontories, and landscapes so magnificent they seem unreal.

Once Upon a Time

The Costa Smeralda was conceived and developed in the 1960s by Prince Karim Aga Khan IV. Captivated by the natural beauty of the area, the Prince, along with a group of international investors, purchased large swathes of land in the Gallura region and embarked on an ambitious tourism development project. The vision was to create a luxurious destination that upkept the natural environment while attracting high-end tourism. This endeavour led to the establishment of Porto Cervo and other renowned locations, transforming Costa Smeralda into one of the world’s most exclusive and prestigious tourist destinations.

Many believe that the name ‘Smeralda’ pays tribute to the crystal-clear waters that reflect this stretch of land in Sardinia. However, in reality, the name is said to be a homage to the daughter of one of the founders of the coastal project, named Esmeralda. One can imagine the joy of this lady whose name has been used to promote one of the most beautiful places in the world. For those unfamiliar with Costa Smeralda, I recommend discovering it through various excursions by catamaran or sailboat, spanning one or more days, to enjoy otherwise unreachable landscapes. A must-do includes a tour of the islands of Piana and Cavallo, and in the distance, Spargi, Budelli and La Maddalena.
